Community Garden Behind Masonic Temple to Close; “Open House” to be Held (Jul. 16)

Sat., Jul. 16 (10am-4pm): The volunteers who administer and maintain Dupont East’s Temple Garden at 15th and S Streets, NW, are inviting the public to tour their large and productive vegetable garden. Children are especially welcome and will be able to touch, smell and taste various plants at special stations around the garden. (Rain date, Sunday, the 17th.)

This may be one of the last times visitors will be able to roam the garden since, after 20 years, its host, the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple, has announced that following the fall harvest the space will, of necessity, need to be commandeered for use as a construction staging, storage, and parking area in connection with a lengthy major rehab of its historic John Russell Pope-designed edifice, now 100 years old. For more information about this project and the need to close down the garden, a copy of an April 7, 2011 letter of explanation from the president of the House of the Temple Historic Preservation Foundation is available on the Temple garden’s website (http://templegarden.net) or go directly to the page at http://tinyurl.com/3uhxk38.
