DDOT to Brief Neighbors on Impending U Street Disruptions

Tue., Nov. 20 (10am): DC transportation department (DDOT) and its construction contractor representatives for the U Street streetscape project will be holding an informal “field” meeting on the sidewalk in front of Nelly’s Sports Bar at 9th and U Streets to discuss the impacts the construction activities will be having and for residents and business owners to express concerns as well as get any questions answered and for DDOT to obtain personal contact information so as to facilitate keeping people informed. As InTowner readers may recall from our report five months ago (“U Street Reconstruction Project to Impact August ‘Dog Days of Summer’ Sale Event,” June 2012, issue PDF page 1; http://tinyurl.com/aqazf4q), the project will result in the widening of sidewalks, planting of trees, roadway repairs, and upgrading of street and traffic lights and of storm drains.

When The InTowner inquired about the apparent delay until October 1st in starting the work, which had been scheduled for the week of June 11th, the reason given was that there had been a delay in obtaining the necessary construction permits from WMATA (Metro’s U Street station is directly below). Notwithstanding this delay, DDOT has stated that it anticipates completion by next spring, weather permitting, as initially planned. To keep informed of progress, visit www.ustreetproject.com.
