April DC Council Special Election Candidates Forum to Focus on Tenant Rights

Wed., Apr. 10 (6:30-9pm): On April 23rd there will be a special election for the at-large City Council seat vacated by the elevation to the council’s chairmanship of Phil Mendelson. In advance of this, TENAC will be holding an open-to-all candidates forum focusing on issues of importance to all DC residents who are tenants at the Sumner School Museum & Archives (17th & M Sts., NW). This event was rescheduled from the 6th because of predictions of a serious snow storm (which never materialized!).

Views to be sought from the participating candidates will include their positions on skyrocketing rents, stronger rent controls, condo conversions, sub-metering and other imposed extra charges above and beyond rent, and tenants’ rights generally. The organizers will be encouraging active questioning of the candidates, especially on whether they believe that the 10-year extension of rent control was sufficient and whether they agree that the two percent plus cost of living increase is also sufficient. For more information, visit www.tenac.org, or send email to tenacdc@yahoo.com or call (202) 628-3688.
