The neighborhood’s long-time La Tomate restaurant again sponsored its tradition of many years that had been for some time in abeyance, but revived last year, with its handsome Christmas tree’s 1,000-plus lights beckoning from its patio at Connecticut Avenue and R Street.

With Historic Dupont Circle Main Streets (HDCMS) assisting with organizing the event, the early Friday evening, December 5th festivities –- and ignoring cold and damp weather — more than 250 children, along with parents and large numbers of other neighbors had a fun time with HDCMS co-chair Dail Doucette as Santa and enjoying the holiday cookies and candies while visiting with friends and neighbors and taking photos of the lively scene.

As HDCMS Executive Director Bill McLeod aptly stated, “Dupont Circle has always been the center of good cheer for the holidays and we are honored to herald in this special season with dignitaries, local school children, and amazing volunteers. Dupont has more than 150 retailers and 200 restaurants, which is what makes the neighborhood a big draw -– all year round.”

The mission of the Main Streets group includes initiatives to retain, expand and attract a mix of neighborhood businesses and to lend assistance to those independent business owners; to preserve the diverse and historic character of the neighborhood; to manage and improve public spaces; and to promote Dupont Circle as a destination.
