Scenes from the Past...

After more than 11 years and 136 monthly contributions to this space, Paul Williams has bid farewell to The InTowner as he takes up his duties as the new President of the Association for the Preservation of the Historic Congressional Cemetery.

Succeeding that feature in September of 2012 is this “What Once Was” feature — now exclusively online, allowing for more extensive text and more images than was possible when published in the monthly issue PDFs. For nearly five years until June of 2015, researching and writing was undertaken by Stephen A. Hansen, an historic preservation specialist, Washington DC historian, author of several books and of the Virtual Architectural Archaeology blog.

Following his decision to devote more time to researching and writing more books, authorship of this feature has been taken on by Matthew B. Gilmore, the editor of the H-DC discussion list and blogs on Washington history and related subjects at; he is also on the Board of Directors of Humanities DC. Previously, he was a reference librarian at the Washingtoniana Division of the DC Public Library for a number of years and chaired the Annual Conference on DC Historical Studies for four years.

Note: The images that accompany this feature and that are referred to in the above text are not shown here, but are available in the current print edition and in the PDF file version which can be downloaded at this page.
